Target and Hazard: Deoxynivalenol (DON, vomitoxin) is produced mainly by Fusarium species such as Fusarium graminearum and belongs to the type B trichothecene mycotoxins. It is one of the most prevalent mycotoxin contaminants of wheat, maize, barley and other cereals and feedstuffs. Pigs are the most sensitive species: ingestion causes vomiting, feed refusal, salivation and stunted growth, while poultry and ruminants show reduced feed intake, egg production and feed conversion efficiency after prolonged exposure. DON also has intestinal toxicity and immunosuppressive effects and can carry over into meat, eggs and milk, directly threatening feed safety, animal health and product quality; it is therefore a priority item in routine mycotoxin control of feed and raw materials.
Significance of Testing: The card provides rapid on-site screening of DON in cereals, feed and raw materials at a cut-off of 200 μg/kg (200 ppb), matching the need to control this toxin in feedstuffs. It allows batches to be assessed before purchase, intake or feed preparation, supporting a “no contaminated material into the mill or onto the line” policy and providing a basis for feed formulation adjustment, batch rejection or confirmatory laboratory quantification, thereby reducing the risk of animal poisoning and production loss.
Principle: Colloidal gold immunochromatographic competitive assay: DON in the sample extract competes with gold-labelled anti-DON monoclonal antibody for the DON antigen conjugate coated on the test line (T). The higher the toxin concentration, the weaker the colour at the T line, giving a qualitative/semi-quantitative result; the control line (C) confirms procedure validity.
Performance and Applications: No instrument required; simple homogenate extraction with the supplied buffer; visual reading within 5–10 minutes; samples: extracts of milled wheat, maize, barley and compound feed; store at 2–30 °C in a cool, dry place with an 18-month shelf life. Suitable for raw-material acceptance in feed mills, on-site testing of home-mixed feed on farms, grain storage and third-party rapid screening; cut-off 200 μg/kg (200 ppb). Method: colloidal gold immunochromatographic assay (competitive) | Samples: extracts of milled wheat, maize, barley and compound feed | Time to result: 5–10 min | Reading: visual assessment of T/C lines — a T line weaker than the C line, or absent, indicates a result at or above the cut-off (positive); cut-off 200 μg/kg (200 ppb); C line is the procedural control | Format: tests/box (as stated on the label) | Storage: 2–30 °C, cool and dry; shelf life 18 months | Note: sensitivity, specificity, limit of detection, intra-/inter-assay CV and agreement with instrumental methods (e.g. HPLC/LC-MS/MS) are subject to our internal QC report.
