Target and Hazard: Toxoplasma gondii is a zoonotic intracellular protozoan parasite; the cat is its definitive host, while dogs, cats and many other warm-blooded animals serve as intermediate hosts. Infected cats shed oocysts in faeces, contaminating the environment, feed and water and providing a major route of transmission to humans and animals. Acute feline infection causes fever, anorexia, pneumonia, hepatitis and neurological signs, while canine infection may cause neurological signs and myositis. Toxoplasma is of particular concern for pregnant women and immunocompromised people, giving the infection status of pet dogs and cats significant public-health importance.
Significance of Testing: The card detects Toxoplasma-specific antibodies in canine and feline serum for screening and epidemiological investigation of infection, especially in animals fed raw meat, kept outdoors or with a history of abortion. A positive result indicates infection or past exposure and can inform zoonosis control and husbandry management.
Principle: Colloidal gold immunochromatographic assay: Toxoplasma antigen is coated on the test line (T); specific antibodies in the sample bind gold-labelled antigen, migrate along the membrane and are captured at the T line, producing a visible line that indicates antibody positivity.
Performance and Applications: No equipment required; serum, plasma or whole blood; visual reading within 10–20 minutes; room-temperature storage. Suitable for Toxoplasma screening in veterinary clinics, primary practices and dog/cat breeding facilities. Method: colloidal gold immunochromatographic assay | Samples: whole blood or serum | Target: Toxoplasma-specific antibodies | Time to result: 10–20 min | Reading: visual assessment of T/C lines — a coloured T line indicates a positive result, C line is the procedural control | Format: tests/box (as stated on the label) | Storage: 2–30 °C, cool and dry; shelf life 24 months | Note: sensitivity, specificity, limit of detection, intra-/inter-assay CV and agreement with reference methods are subject to our internal QC report.
