Description

Target and Hazard: Toxoplasma gondii is an obligate intracellular protozoan; felids are its only definitive host, while pigs, sheep, dogs, cats and humans can act as intermediate hosts. Infected cats shed oocysts in faeces that contaminate feed, water and the environment and infect other animals by the oral route. When pregnant sows or ewes are infected for the first time, the parasite can cross the placenta and cause abortion, stillbirth, mummified fetuses and weak offspring, making it an important cause of reproductive failure with significant public-health relevance.

Significance of Testing: The card detects Toxoplasma-specific antibodies in serum for infection screening and epidemiological investigation in pigs, sheep, dogs and cats, providing serological evidence for investigating outbreaks of reproductive failure, quarantine testing of incoming animals and biosecurity assessment. As an antibody assay, a positive result indicates past infection and cannot alone establish the acute phase; it should be interpreted together with clinical findings and pathogen detection.

Principle: Colloidal gold lateral flow in a capture format: the test line (T) is coated with Toxoplasma antigen; specific antibodies in the sample bind and are recognised by a gold-labelled anti-species IgG conjugate, producing a visible line. The control line (C) confirms reagent and procedure validity.

Performance and Applications: No equipment required; serum or plasma; visual reading at 15 minutes; store at 2–30 °C in a cool, dry place, shelf life 18 months. For infection screening and epidemiological investigation on commercial pig and sheep farms, in veterinary clinics and kennels/catteries and at primary veterinary stations. Method: colloidal gold lateral flow immunoassay (capture format) | Samples: serum, plasma | Time to result: 15 min | Reading: visual assessment of T/C lines — a coloured T line indicates a positive Toxoplasma antibody result, C line is the procedural control | Format: tests/box (as stated on the label) | Storage: 2–30 °C, cool and dry; shelf life 18 months | Note: sensitivity, specificity, limit of detection, intra-/inter-assay CV and agreement with reference methods are subject to our internal QC report.
