Target and Hazard: The H7 subtype of avian influenza virus attracts particular attention because strains such as H7N9 can infect humans, and its highly pathogenic variants often cause high mortality in poultry; highly pathogenic avian influenza is a Class I animal disease in China. The virus replicates mainly in the respiratory and digestive tracts of poultry and spreads through secretions, faeces and contaminated materials, with live-bird trade and transport being important routes of dissemination. Once a flock is infected, both egg production and survival fall and there is a public-health risk of human infection, so rapid on-site identification of H7 has a double significance.
Significance of Testing: The duplex card carries two test lines on a single strip: the universal line recognises the type-specific antigen shared by all type A avian influenza viruses and quickly indicates whether avian influenza virus is present, while the H7 line identifies the H7 subtype. Reading both lines completes the on-site question 'is it avian influenza, and is it H7?' within 15 minutes. It is intended for outbreak investigation on poultry farms and in live-bird markets, quarantine testing of poultry movements and environmental screening of flocks linked to suspected human cases. A positive result must be reported and laboratory-confirmed in accordance with national regulations.
Principle: Colloidal gold immunochromatographic assay (double-antibody sandwich): the type-specific antigen and the H7 subtype antigen in the sample each bind their corresponding gold-labelled antibody; on migrating to the universal test line (T1) and the H7-subtype test line (T2) they are captured by immobilised antibodies and produce visible lines, with the control line (C) confirming reagent and procedure validity.
Performance and Applications: No instrument required; visual reading in 10–15 minutes; samples: tracheal/cloacal swabs, tissue homogenate; store and ship at 2–30 °C, shelf life 24 months. Suitable for rapid on-site screening on poultry farms, in live-bird markets, slaughterhouses, primary veterinary stations and at border quarantine, and can be used alongside the universal–H5 subtype duplex card. Method: colloidal gold immunochromatographic assay (double-antibody sandwich) | Samples: tracheal/cloacal swabs, tissue homogenate | Time to result: 10–15 min | Reading: visual assessment of T1 (universal)/T2 (H7 subtype)/C lines | Format: tests/box (as stated on the label) | Storage: 2–30 °C, cool and dry; shelf life 24 months | Note: sensitivity, specificity, limit of detection, intra-/inter-assay CV and agreement with RT-PCR/virus isolation are subject to our internal QC report.
