Target and Hazard: Progesterone (Prog) is secreted by the bovine corpus luteum and is the key hormone for maintaining pregnancy and reflecting ovarian cycle status; its concentration in blood or milk indicates luteal function and the stage of the oestrous cycle. For cattle production, the greatest hidden economic loss comes from open cows and missed oestrus: a single missed diagnosis typically extends the open period by one cycle (about 21 days), lengthens the calving interval, raises insemination and feeding costs and lowers milk yield per parity, cumulatively reducing herd reproductive efficiency and annual profitability.
Significance of Testing: The kit measures progesterone in blood or milk to support assessment of luteal function, oestrous status and pregnancy in cows. It is used for auxiliary confirmation of pregnancy or non-pregnancy after insemination, oestrus detection and timing of insemination, and auxiliary evaluation of ovarian disorders such as persistent corpus luteum and luteal insufficiency. Timely identification of open cows and prompt re-breeding shortens open days and improves conception and reproductive rates, making it a practical tool for on-farm reproductive management.
Principle: Colloidal gold immunochromatographic assay in a double-antibody sandwich format: progesterone in the sample binds gold-labelled anti-progesterone antibody, and the complex is captured by the anti-progesterone antibody coated on the test line (T), forming a visible line whose intensity increases with the progesterone level. Colour intensity provides a semi-quantitative reading used with a reference card to assess luteal function and pregnancy-related status; the control line (C) confirms procedure validity.
Performance and Applications: No equipment required; samples: serum, plasma or milk (processed as per instructions); result 5 minutes after loading (results after 10 minutes are invalid) by visual reading, with an optional reader card for semi-quantitative reference; storage and shipment at 2–30 °C, cool and dry, with an 24-month shelf life. Suitable for on-farm use, insemination technicians and primary veterinary stations for reproductive management and pregnancy checks.
