Description

Target and Hazard: Canine parvovirus (CPV), canine coronavirus (CCoV) and Giardia are among the most common causes of acute diarrhoea in dogs, all presenting with vomiting, diarrhoea and dehydration. CPV causes haemorrhagic enteritis that may be fatal in puppies; CCoV usually produces milder enteritis but markedly aggravates the disease when co-infecting with CPV; Giardia is an intestinal protozoan causing chronic or intermittent diarrhoea and weight loss and is a zoonotic agent posing a potential risk to household members. Because the signs are highly similar, the three are easily lumped together as gastroenteritis, delaying targeted management.

Significance of Testing: This triplex card carries three test lines on one strip and detects CPV antigen, CCoV antigen and Giardia antigen from a single sample, rapidly differentiating the three common diarrhoeal pathogens and reducing the risk of missing mixed infections. It supports the selection of appropriate antiviral supportive therapy, antiprotozoal treatment and disinfection/isolation measures, and applies to aetiological screening of diarrhoea cases, investigation of group outbreaks in kennels and quarantine testing of newly introduced dogs.

Principle: Colloidal gold immunochromatographic assay (double-antibody sandwich): CPV, CCoV and Giardia antigens in the sample each bind to their corresponding gold-labelled antibody, migrate along the nitrocellulose membrane and are captured by the specific antibody coated on their respective test lines (T1/T2/T3), producing visible lines; the control line (C) confirms reagent and procedure validity.

Performance and Applications: No instrument required; visual reading within 10–15 minutes; samples: faeces or rectal swabs; stored and shipped at room temperature — suitable for point-of-care testing in veterinary clinics, kennels, shelters and primary veterinary units. Method: colloidal gold immunochromatographic assay (double-antibody sandwich) | Samples: faeces, rectal swabs | Time to result: 10–15 min | Reading: visual assessment of T1 (CPV)/T2 (CCoV)/T3 (Giardia)/C lines | Format: tests/box (as stated on the label) | Storage: 2–30 °C, cool and dry; shelf life 24 months | Note: sensitivity, specificity, limit of detection, intra-/inter-assay CV and agreement with RT-PCR/pathogen detection are subject to our internal QC report.
