Description

Target and Hazard: Foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) is caused by FMDV (genus Aphthovirus, family Picornaviridae) and affects cloven-hoofed animals including pigs, cattle, sheep and goats. It is a Class I animal disease in China and a WOAH-listed disease requiring notification. Animals develop vesicles and erosions on the oral mucosa, hooves and teats, and young stock may die suddenly from myocarditis. Spread is extremely rapid and an outbreak requires stamping-out and movement control, severely disrupting livestock production and trade.

Significance of Testing: FMDV non-structural proteins (NSP) are produced only during virus replication; animals immunised with inactivated vaccines normally produce no or very low levels of NSP antibody. The card therefore detects serum NSP antibodies to differentiate field-virus infection from inactivated-vaccine immunity in vaccinated pig, cattle and sheep herds — a key tool for FMD-free status, outbreak surveillance and disease eradication.

Principle: Indirect colloidal gold lateral flow: the test line (T) is coated with FMDV non-structural protein (e.g. 3ABC) antigen; sample NSP antibodies bind and are recognised by a gold-labelled anti-species IgG conjugate, giving a visible T line. The control line (C) confirms procedure validity.

Performance and Applications: No equipment required; serum or plasma; visual reading at 15 minutes; store at 2–30 °C in a cool, dry place, shelf life 24 months. For field-virus screening and quarantine testing on commercial pig, cattle and sheep farms, and for on-site surveillance by animal disease control institutions and primary veterinary stations. Method: colloidal gold lateral flow immunoassay (indirect) | Samples: serum, plasma | Time to result: 15 min | Reading: visual assessment of T/C lines — a coloured T line indicates the presence of non-structural protein (NSP) antibody, C line is the procedural control | Format: tests/box (as stated on the label) | Storage: 2–30 °C, cool and dry; shelf life 24 months | Note: sensitivity, specificity, limit of detection, intra-/inter-assay CV and agreement with reference methods are subject to our internal QC report.
